Ötztal Hut Taster
Three days and two nights, the shortest way to find out how you walk at altitude.

The Ötztal Hut Taster is our shortest route: 28.2 km, with one night at Gasthof Ronach and one at Fernerblick Hut at 2,597 m. We suggest it to walkers who have never slept high and want to know how their legs cope before booking five or six days.
The second day is short and steep: 4.4 km with 986 m of ascent and no descent, from the inn to the hut. That is the most climbing on any day here, and it stays under the 1,000 m line of grade 2. The last day crosses the Grauer Joch at 2,860 m, a broad saddle on a clear path, then comes down 1,410 m.
Height does not set the grade, so a high saddle on an easy path still counts as grade 2. Lena Gruber guides all five departures in 2027.

Day by day
Meeting point
We meet in the start village at 9am on the first day and finish around 3pm on the last. Fly into the region’s airport, then take the train and bus; the timetable comes with your route notes.
Every route has a bad-weather line. Your guide decides on the morning, and the price stays the same.
If cloud or storms sit on the Grauer Joch, Lena turns the group back from Fernerblick Hut the way it came. It then follows the valley path to Platzl.
Day 01

Ventrach to Gasthof Ronach
Gasthof Ronach, an inn rather than a hut, gives the group its first night, with Speckknödel soup and roast chicken for dinner. It stands 10.0 km from Ventrach, where the group meets at 9am, along farm tracks on the valley side and through larch. The whole day climbs only 230 m. In the evening Lena takes everyone through tomorrow’s climb on the elevation profile, metre by metre.
Day 02
The short, steep climb
Expect this to take most of the morning. All 986 m of the day are uphill on a zigzag path, in only 4.4 km, with no descent to rest the legs. Near the top the air is thinner, so keep to a slow, even pace. The afternoon at Fernerblick Hut is yours to rest.

Day 03

Over the Grauer Joch to Platzl
The morning climbs to the Grauer Joch at 2,860 m, a wide saddle with a clear path across it. From there it is 1,410 m of descent to Platzl, and the whole day has only 262 m of ascent. Gravel rolls underfoot on the steep upper slope, and poles help you keep your footing there. You reach Platzl at about 3pm for the transfer back to Ventrach.
